What is the HYROX Cruise: the cruise where the vacation includes wall balls

Four nights on a boat in the Mediterranean with HYROX classes at all hours. We explain how it works, what it includes, why in the end there was no race on board and for whom it is worth it.

STREETWOD·

In case anyone is new: a HYROX race consists of running one kilometer and doing an exercise, eight times in a row. Five miles of running and eight stations: SkiErg, sledding, rowing, wall balls and four other ways to repent. It is done in large pavilions, with a stopwatch and thousands of people.

The HYROX Cruise is something else. It is a vacation cruise in which the main plan is to train like in HYROX. There is no medal or classification. There is a boat, the Mediterranean and many classes.

The first edition has just finished. We explain how it works so you know if the next one is right for you.

The ship, the route and the dates

HYROX has a travel brand, HYROX Experiences, which has rented an entire cruise ship: the Mein Schiff 4, from the shipping company TUI Cruises. Only people from the event were on board. HYROX speaks of up to 2,300 participants.

The route lasted four nights, from October 21 to 25, 2026:

  • Wednesday 21: departure from Palma de Mallorca, at night.
  • Thursday 22nd: full day at sea, without stopping at any port.
  • Friday the 23rd: stopover in Marseille.
  • Saturday 24: stopover in Barcelona.
  • Sunday 25: return to Palma and disembark in the morning.

During stops you can go down to the city or stay on the boat training. Both options are legitimate. One of them leaves you photos in Barcelona.

What a day on board is like

Imagine that your gym has four rooms, it is open all day and in each room there is a different class at the same time. You look at the schedule in the ship's app, book what you want and the rest of the time you live the cruise life: pool, sauna, buffet and nap.

HYROX says there are over 350 hours of sessions in four days. That number is scary, but there is a trick: it is the sum of all the classes that occur at the same time on the entire boat. You are not going to do 350 hours. You will do two or three classes a day, at most, and with that you will get off the ship walking strangely.

The program was designed by David Magida, HYROX training manager and former Elite athlete. Each cover has a style:

  • Cover 14, for serious training. Strength with weights, resistance work with rowing, SkiErg and running, and sessions that closely resemble a real HYROX race. Each zone ends with a timed challenge. It is the cover of those who go on vacation with their training watch on.
  • Deck 12, mass classes. More than 150 people at a time, with a DJ, someone cheering on the microphone and dumbbell, kettlebell, rowing, SkiErg and sandbag stations. It's like the WOD on Saturday, but with 140 more strangers and views of the sea.
  • Deck 5, atmosphere and talks. Classes with music, mobility sessions and talks with athletes and coaches about race strategy, nutrition and recovery.
  • Cover 4, to recover. Breathing, gentle stretching and relaxation. It is designed for the day after having gone to deck 14 with too much enthusiasm.

An important detail: all activities are in English. To follow a class it is enough to know how to count to ten and understand "go." To take advantage of the talks, something else is convenient.

So is there a race or not?

Here is the confusion that half the world has had.

In May, HYROX announced that the first Elite 15 race of the season would be held on the boat. The Elite 15 is the competition of the 15 best athletes in the world, which appears on broadcasts. It was to be the first official HYROX race on the high seas.

In the end it was not like that. The official HYROX calendar puts the first race of the Elite 15 in Hamburg, on October 30 and 31, in a pavilion, as always.

So the summary is this: there were elite athletes on the boat, but to give classes, talks and take photos with people. If you want to see them really compete, the event is Hamburg.

What is included in the price and what is not

Enter:

  • Four nights in the cabin of your choice.
  • All day food and more than a hundred drinks.
  • Swimming pools, sauna and wellness area.
  • The entire training program and ship activities.
  • Tips.

Paid separately:

  • Flights or the trip to Palma.
  • Wi-Fi, except in the suites. On the high seas it goes by satellite, so the direct one from your sled push will have to wait.
  • Massages and some special activities.
  • More than one coffee in the cabin. In normal cabins the machine produces one espresso per person per day. On a ship full of people training, this is probably the toughest rule of the entire cruise.

##Who can go

Training sessions are for people over 16 years old. Children can travel with their parents, but they do not attend classes and someone has to take care of them in the meantime. The organization itself warns that it is an event designed for adults.

You don't have to be a competitive athlete. There are classes for all levels, just like in a gym. What you do need is that you want to train on vacation.

Is it worth it?

It depends on what you mean by vacation.

You will love it if: you like HYROX, you enjoy training with a lot of people, you want to learn from top-level coaches and the idea of rowing with sea views seems like a great plan to you.

Better stay on land if: you want to compete and have an official record, you don't speak any English or your idea of a vacation is not to see a kettlebell all week.

The HYROX Cruise is what happens when a sport in which you pay to suffer discovers that you can also suffer with sea views and a buffet waiting for you.

HYROX has not yet announced a second edition. If he announces it, we will tell you here.
