DEKA FIT explained area by area (and what you will think about each one)

Ten zones, five kilometers and a RAM that you didn't know existed. Honest guide to DEKA FIT, with upcoming tests in Spain.

STREETWOD·

If HYROX is the famous cousin, DEKA is the cousin that doesn't appear as much on Instagram but beats you at Christmas dinners. It is organized by Spartan, the same obstacle course company, and has three formats: DEKA FIT, DEKA MILE and DEKA STRONG. Today we talk about the most complete.

The format

DEKA FIT has ten zones. Before each one you run 500 meters, so in the end there are 5 kilometers of running. The zones are done in order, from 1 to 10. There is an important rule: if you do not complete any zone, or are not able to do even one repetition, you are disqualified. You can finish the course and take your finisher's t-shirt, but without an official brand. So it's better to know in advance what you're going to find.

Zone by zone

  • Zone 1. 30 alternating reverse lunges with RAM. The RAM is a weighted tube that looks like it was designed by someone who hated dumbbells. The knee has to touch the ground and must be fully extended. What you think: “This is easy.” It is not.
  • Zone 2. 500 m rowing. You cannot get off until completing the distance. What you think: "Here I rest." Neither.
  • Zone 3. 20 jumps or steps over the gym. Both feet must touch above and the entire body must pass to the other side. What you think: "Who put the drawer so high?" Nobody. It's standard.
  • **Zone 4.

25 sit-ups with a ball throw.** The ball touches the ground and is thrown over the head. What you think: nothing, because you are looking at the ceiling and counting wrong.

  • Zone 5. 500 m from SkiErg. What you think: “This is like skiing.” It is not at all. Skiing has views.
  • Zone 6. 100 m of the farmer's walk. A dumbbell in each hand. What you think: "My forearms had other plans for today."
  • Zone 7. 25 calories on Air Bike. What you think: things we can't publish.
  • Zone 8. 20 Dead Ball over the wall. You lift a dead ball, pass it over a wall and go around completely. Twenty times. What you think: "The ball is not dead. "I am."
  • Zone 9. 100 m of sledding, pushing and pulling. You push forward and pull back while walking backwards, with all four wheels always on the ground. What you think: "The sleigh has wheels. Why does it weigh so much?
  • Zone 10. 20 burpees with RAM. Chest to RAM, raise the RAM above your head and repeat. What you think: “Almost”, and this time it's true.

Three tips to avoid suffering more than necessary

  • The 500 meters are deceiving. They are short, so the temptation is to run them fast. Ten times. Get out under control: zone 9 will take its toll on you for all the extra running you have done.
  • Practice the strange areas. You have the rower and the SkiErg in any box. RAM and Dead Ball, not so much. If you can, try them before. If not, simulate it with similar material: a bag for the RAM, a heavy ball for the Dead Ball.
  • Counts quietly. With fatigue, repetitions are lost with surprising ease. Counting in blocks of five helps a lot.

The next DEKA in Spain

  • Guadalajara: October 24 and 25, 2026.
  • Alicante: October 31 and November 1, 2026.
  • Tenerife: November 21 and 22, 2026. There are individual and team modalities. The exact dates of each format are on the DEKA Spain website.

Who is it for? For those who want something similar to HYROX but with more variety, less race per stage and the excitement of discovering what a RAM is live. And if the 5 km scares you, start with DEKA MILE (160 meters before each zone, 1.6 km in total) or DEKA STRONG (without running). Nobody is going to judge you. Well, the Gym Gorilla does, but the Gorilla judges everyone. Sources: DEKA official regulations and DEKA Spain calendar, October 2026.
